Science Week 2018
Last week was all about discovery and exploration at St Andrew’s Prep as we celebrated British Science Week. Pupils from all year groups enjoyed participating in the different activities that were organised around the school.
Nursery loved playing with coloured ice cubes and Reception gathered in assembly and dressed a grown up in all the things they needed to take to the Arctic.
Years 2 and 3 visited Herstmonceux Science Observatory which also formed part of our transition programme for Years 2 and Year 3 children to get to know each other as they will come together to form the new Juniors Department next year. The day was wet and chilly but the children still had a fabulous time building bridges, dressing up as insects to learn about pollination and having fun learning and playing with over a hundred hands-on exhibits.
Year 5 learned about force and air resistance and how to slow falling objects down and put their knowledge to the test by attempting to safely land raw eggs on the Square Asphalt from the Top Floor Library! There were varying degrees of success with some resounding triumphs and some a little more scrambled.
Children from all year groups enjoyed a fascinating science talk provided by Ian Dunne. Mr Dunne, a science presenter, turned the Richardson building into a space for exploration and curiosity where the children learned about galaxies, gravity and static electricity. The pupils were very excited to see a miniature Dalek and stroke a robotic cat! Most importantly, they learned that, in science, things are not always what they look like, and that it is good to ask questions.
