UK Junior Maths Challenge 2019
Many congratulations to Isaac, Alex, Esme, Sam F, Sam C and Clara who have all qualified for the next round (the Kangaroo) of the UK’s biggest national maths competition, the United Kingdom Maths Trust (UKMT) Junior Maths Challenge. Our pupils completed a paper containing 25 multiple choice questions. Of these, the first 15 were more accessible whilst the final 10 required considerably more thought.
The competition offers gold, silver and bronze certificates to 40% of participants who take part nationally with only the most successful participants at each level invited to the follow-on rounds.
Paul Shouksmith, Deputy Head Academic and Head of Maths said, “They have all worked hard to produce this fine achievement and our fingers are crossed for the more testing next round. The Challenge is a stimulating and rewarding experience for all children who take part ”
Aiming to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics, last year, The UKMT saw over 600,000 pupils from 4,000 schools take part in their three challenges (Junior, Intermediate and Senior) aimed at children from 11 – 18 years old. Questions range from the more straightforward “How many minutes is it from 23:35 today to 01:15 tomorrow?” to the more challenging “Emily writes down the largest two-digit prime such that each of its digits is prime. Krish writes down the smallest two-digit prime such that each of its digits is prime. What does Kristen get if she subtracts Krish’s number from Emily’s number?”
